How to Use the Godown Feature in Tally Prime

June 27, 20266 min readAkib Husain

In inventory management, a "Godown" (or warehouse) is any physical location used to store stock items. Tally Prime allows you to create multiple godowns (e.g. Raw Material Warehouse, Finished Goods Depot, Shop Floor) to monitor stock levels, record location-wise sales, and track internal stock transfers.

Step 1: Enable the Godown Feature in Tally Prime

Before creating separate locations, you must enable the feature in your company settings:

  1. Open Tally Prime and press F11 (Features).
  2. Under the Inventory section, set Enable Multiple Godowns to Yes.
  3. Press Ctrl+A to save and apply the settings.

Step 2: Create a New Godown

Once enabled, follow these steps to add your storage locations:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally > Create.
  2. Select Godown under the Inventory Masters list.
  3. Tally will alert you if this is your first godown, prompting you to alter the default location ("Main Location"). Select Create New.
  4. Enter the **Name** of the warehouse (e.g. "Bhandup Warehouse").
  5. In the **Under** field, select **Primary** or allocate it under a parent region if you use a multi-tiered warehouse hierarchy. Press Ctrl+A to save.

Step 3: Transferring Stock Between Godowns

To record moving stock items from one warehouse to another without recording a purchase or sale, use a **Stock Journal** voucher:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally > Vouchers.
  2. Press Alt+F7 (Stock Journal).
  3. The screen is split into **Source (Consumption)** on the left and **Destination (Production)** on the right.
  4. On the **Source** side, select the stock item, choose the origin godown (e.g. Bhandup Warehouse), and enter the quantity and rate.
  5. On the **Destination** side, select the same stock item, choose the target godown (e.g. Shop Floor), and enter the identical quantity and rate.
  6. Save the voucher. Tally will decrement stock from the origin and increment it at the target location.

How TrulyInvoice Simplifies Inventory Audits

If your business operates across multiple locations, reconciling sales registers with different dispatch godowns is error-prone. TrulyInvoice resolves this layout verification challenge:

  • Warehouse Auto-Routing: TrulyInvoice reads dispatch location fields from e-commerce or POS sales sheets and maps transactions to correct Tally ledger groups automatically.
  • Pre-Reconciliation: It matches purchase invoices containing delivery addresses to specific storage godowns, reducing manual entry mistakes.
  • Syncs entries to Tally Prime over a secure Port 9000 connector at a flat rate of **plans starting at ₹399/month**.
