ICICI Bank Connected Banking in TallyPrime: Complete Setup Guide

July 2, 202612 min readCA Rakesh Sharma

In modern corporate finance departments, the manual execution of bank reconciliation and supplier payouts is one of the biggest bottlenecks. Accounts teams typically generate payment lists in TallyPrime, manually upload them as bulk CSVs on bank portals, wait for promoter approvals, and then check off entries one by one against the ledger, a process prone to errors.

To eliminate this friction, Tally Solutions teamed up with major commercial banks to provide Connected Banking. The integration with ICICI Bank Corporate Internet Banking (CIB) is the most widely used deployment. This guide walks through the exact prerequisites, portal registrations, Tally configurations, ledger mapping, and error troubleshooting steps required to establish a fully automated, bi-directional bank integration.

1. Prerequisites for ICICI Connected Banking

Before starting the configuration in TallyPrime, ensure you have completed the following business registrations:

  • Active ICICI Bank Corporate Account: Your business must hold a current account with ICICI Bank and have access to the Corporate Internet Banking (CIB) portal.
  • CIB User Roles: You must have administrative access to the CIB portal to authorize third-party integrations, along with Maker and Checker credentials.
  • Valid Tally Software Services (TSS): Connected Banking is an online service. Your TallyPrime installation must have a valid, active TSS subscription. If expired, renew your license before continuing.
  • TallyPrime Release Compatibility: While basic banking features exist in version 3.x and 4.x, full connected banking with auto-reconciliation is optimized for TallyPrime Release 5.0 and Release 7.1.

2. Step 1: Requesting API Integration on the ICICI CIB Portal

For security reasons, ICICI Bank does not allow third-party connections by default. You must explicitly authorize TallyPrime to communicate with your account:

  1. Log into the ICICI Corporate Internet Banking (CIB) portal using your administrator Corporate ID, User ID, and password.
  2. Navigate to the Corporate Care / Service Request section or look for the API Banking / Integrations tab.
  3. Select Register Third-Party ERP or search for Tally Solutions Integration Request.
  4. Enter your Tally serial number (accessible via Help > About in TallyPrime) and select the specific accounts you wish to link.
  5. Authorize the request using your secure mobile app OTP or physical corporate token.
  6. ICICI Bank generally processes the ERP integration approval within 24 to 48 hours. Once approved, you will receive a registration confirmation email containing your Corporate ID and ERP token parameters.

3. Step 2: Configuring ICICI Bank Ledger in TallyPrime

Once approved on the bank side, proceed with mapping the ledger inside TallyPrime:

  1. Go to Gateway of Tally > Alter > Ledger and select your existing ICICI bank ledger (or create a new one under Bank Accounts).
  2. Ensure the Bank Name field is set to ICICI Bank (India) from the predefined list. This enables the statutory banking configurations.
  3. Under the Bank Configuration options, set the following parameters:
    • Enable Auto Reconciliation: Yes.
    • Enable e-Payments: Yes.
    • Set/Alter e-payments configuration: Yes.
  4. In the e-payments configuration screen:
    • Set the Product Type to ICICI Bank Connected Banking.
    • Enter your Corporate ID and the designated User ID associated with the Maker profile.
    • Configure the payment modes you wish to support (NEFT, RTGS, IMPS, Fund Transfer).
  5. Press Ctrl + A to save the configuration settings.

4. Step 3: Executing Direct Payments from TallyPrime

With configuration complete, you can now process payments directly from TallyPrime:

  1. Go to Vouchers > F5 (Payment) and select your ICICI Bank ledger as the account.
  2. Select the supplier ledger under Particulars, enter the payment amount, and select Against Ref to adjust the invoice.
  3. In the Bank Allocations screen, select the transaction type as e-Fund Transfer.
  4. Confirm the supplier's bank details (Account Number, IFSC, and Beneficiary Name) are populated. If missing, configure them in the ledger.
  5. Save the payment voucher. The payment request is placed in the **e-Payments Queue**.
  6. To release the payments, navigate to Gateway of Tally > Banking > e-Payments. Select the pending payments, click Send to Bank, and enter your secure OTP to authorize the transfer.

5. Reconciling Statements with Connected Banking

Connected Banking replaces the manual process of downloading CSV files from corporate accounts and matching them locally:

  • Go to Gateway of Tally > Banking > Bank Reconciliation and select the ICICI bank ledger.
  • Press Alt + S (Fetch Statement). TallyPrime connects to the ICICI corporate server securely using your active TSS credentials.
  • Enter your login password or OTP if prompted for multi-factor authentication.
  • The statement is downloaded in the background, and TallyPrime automatically matches transaction dates and amounts against your ledger vouchers.
  • Review the unmatched entries in the lower panel and press Alt + C (Create Voucher) to record bank charges or interest entries instantly.

6. Security Architecture of Connected Banking

Security is a common concern when linking business accounting databases directly to bank accounts. TallyPrime employs a multi-tiered security structure to protect your funds:

  • No Storage of Banking Credentials: TallyPrime does not save your transaction passwords, PINs, or secondary tokens. Authentication credentials must be provided for each session.
  • Encryption: Data transmitted between TallyPrime and the ICICI server is protected using corporate-grade TLS 1.3 transport-layer encryption.
  • Two-Factor Approval Workflow: TallyPrime only acts as the "Maker" of transactions. No money leaves your account until the designated "Checker" logs into the official ICICI CIB portal or mobile app and approves the payment request.

7. Troubleshooting Common Errors

Error: "ERP Token Invalid or Expired"

Cause: The handshake token issued by the bank has expired, or the Tally serial number mismatch occurred after a license migration.
Fix: Log into the ICICI CIB portal, delete the ERP integration record, and issue a fresh integration request using the updated serial key.

Error: "Beneficiary Bank Details Mismatch"

Cause: The IFSC code or account structure formatted in the party ledger is incorrect, causing bank validation failure.
Fix: Double-check the supplier profile under Alter > Ledger. Ensure there are no spaces or special characters in the account number field.

Error: "TSS Expired"

Cause: Connected banking relies on Tally Software Services for bank-side communications.
Fix: Check your license status under Help > About. If expired, renew your TSS license.
