How to Reconcile Stripe Payouts in Tally Prime
SOP for creating gateway clearing accounts, booking USD-INR conversions, recording MDR fees with GST, and matching Stripe settlements to bank statements.
Who is this for: E-commerce Accounting
Stripe is widely used by SaaS companies, subscription platforms, and international sellers in India. Unlike domestic gateways, Stripe settlements often involve multi-currency transactions, making Tally reconciliation more nuanced.
This guide covers how to set up Tally Prime for Stripe payouts, handle USD-INR conversion, and ensure GST compliance on processing fees.
1. Understanding Stripe's Fee Structure
Stripe charges a flat rate per transaction (e.g., 2% + ₹2 for domestic cards) plus 18% GST on the fee. International card transactions carry additional cross-border fees. The net payout to your bank is always less than the gross customer payment.
For Indian businesses, Stripe issues a tax invoice monthly for its fees, which means you can claim Input Tax Credit (ITC) for the GST charged on those fees.
2. Enabling Multi-Currency in Tally Prime
If you collect payments in USD or other foreign currencies:
- Go to Gateway of Tally > Alter > Currency and create US Dollar (USD).
- Set the Standard Rate and Selling Rate to the RBI reference rate for the transaction date.
- When recording invoices in USD, Tally will automatically calculate the INR equivalent and track forex gain/loss at settlement.
3. Clearing Account Workflow
Create a Stripe Clearing Account under Current Assets. Record all gross sales receipts (in INR or INR-equivalent) against this account. When the net bank settlement arrives:
Debit: Payment Gateway Charges (Stripe fee excl. GST)
Debit: Input CGST / IGST (GST on Stripe fee)
Debit/Credit: Forex Gain or Loss Account
Credit: Stripe Clearing Account (Gross INR amount)
4. Monthly Reconciliation Checklist
- Download the Stripe Dashboard → Payouts → CSV Export for the month.
- Match each payout line with the corresponding journal entry in Tally.
- Verify the Stripe clearing account balance is zero at month end.
- Book the Stripe monthly tax invoice to claim ITC under GSTR-2B.
