How to Record Stock Market Transactions in TallyPrime
How to Record Stock Market Transactions in TallyPrime
Bookkeeping guide for investors and traders to record equity delivery, intraday trades, F&O contracts, dividends, and capital gains in Tally Prime.
Who is this for: Investment Accounting
Recording stock market transactions in TallyPrime is a critical requirement for active retail traders, high-net-worth individuals (HNIs), and corporate investment desks. To keep clean books, you must separate investment assets from business trading activities.
Under the Indian Income Tax Act, share transactions are treated either as Capital Gains (for investors) or Business Income (for active intraday/F&O traders). Mixing these up can trigger tax audit notices and result in incorrect tax computations.
Investor vs. Trader: Tax & Accounting Treatment
The accounting treatment in Tally Prime is determined by your trading intent:
| Parameter | Investors (Capital Gains) | Traders (Business Income) |
|---|---|---|
| Tally Ledger Group | Investments | Purchase Accounts / Current Assets |
| Taxes on Profit | STCG (15% u/s 111A) / LTCG (10% u/s 112A) | Normal Income Tax slab rates |
| STT Treatment | Capitalized to share cost (Non-deductible) | Deductible business expense u/s 36(1)(xv) |
| Expenses (Brokerage, etc.) | Added to share cost / Deducted from sale | Debited to Indirect Expenses (Claimed in P&L) |
Accounting for Long-Term Investments (Capital Gains)
If you hold shares for delivery (investments), capitalize purchase costs and fees (except STT, which is handled per tax rules) directly to the investment asset ledger.
Purchase Voucher Setup:
Debit: Investment - Reliance Shares -- [Buy Value + Stamp Duty + STT]
Debit: Brokerage Charges (Indirect Expenses) -- [Brokerage Fee]
Debit: CGST & SGST / IGST -- [GST on Brokerage]
Credit: Stock Broker Ledger -- [Total Debited from Wallet]
Accounting for Active Trading (Speculative & F&O)
For active trading, profits and losses are booked directly to the Profit & Loss account:
- Intraday Equity (Speculative): Profit or loss must be debited/credited to speculative ledgers. Speculative losses can only be carried forward for 4 years.
- F&O Contracts (Non-Speculative): F&O trades are treated as standard business transactions. You can deduct internet, advisory, and office expenses against this income.
F&O Profit Booking Entry (Journal Voucher - F7):
Debit: Stock Broker Ledger -- [Net Realized Profit]
Credit: F&O Trading Income (Direct Income) -- [Profit Amount]
F&O Loss Booking Entry:
Debit: F&O Trading Loss (Direct Expense) -- [Loss Amount]
Credit: Stock Broker Ledger -- [Net Realized Loss]
Managing Dividend Income in Tally Prime
Dividends received from equity shares and mutual funds must be recorded separately in Tally Prime, as they represent distinct income streams from your investment portfolio — entirely separate from capital gains or business trading income.
To record a dividend receipt in TallyPrime, use a Receipt Voucher (F6) with the following entry:
Debit: Bank Account (e.g., HDFC Savings) -- [Dividend Amount Received]
Credit: Dividend Income -- [Dividend Amount]
Create the Dividend Income ledger under Indirect Incomes in TallyPrime. This keeps dividend receipts visible in your Profit & Loss statement under the "Other Income" section, making it easy for your CA to identify it during ITR preparation.
It is important to note that the taxation of dividends changed fundamentally with the Union Budget 2020. Prior to FY 2020–21, dividends were exempt in the hands of the shareholder (DDT was paid by the company). From FY 2020–21 onwards, dividends are fully taxable at the investor's applicable income tax slab rates under Section 115BBDA being abolished for most categories. Additionally, if your total dividend income from a single company exceeds ₹5,000 in a financial year, TDS at 10% (Section 194) is deducted at source by the company. Ensure you reconcile TDS credit from Form 26AS against the dividends recorded in your Tally books to correctly claim the TDS credit in your ITR.
Automating Payout Reconciliations
Because trading wallets (Zerodha, Groww, AngelOne) see constant fund additions and withdrawals, you must reconcile these bank transfers to keep clean books.
Reconciling SBI, HDFC, or ICICI bank statements for e-commerce or wallet deposits manually is slow and prone to errors. You can automate this process using TrulyInvoice. TrulyInvoice parses your bank statement PDFs and maps wallet deposit and withdrawal rows directly into Tally Prime contra and receipt ledgers. TrulyInvoice processes unlimited transactions on a flat subscription of plans starting at ₹399/month, ensuring your bank books are perfectly reconciled.
