GST Portal Login: Step-by-Step Guide for Taxpayers (gst.gov.in)

July 12, 202611 min readFaheem Ferdous

The GST Portal (gst.gov.in) is the single-window platform for all indirect tax compliance in India. Every GST-registered taxpayer must regularly log in to file returns (GSTR-1, GSTR-3B), verify Input Tax Credit (ITC) in GSTR-2B, make tax payments, download registration certificates, and respond to notices issued by the department.

Despite its importance, many taxpayers struggle with login errors, forgotten passwords, OTP failures, and poor understanding of the dashboard. This comprehensive guide covers every aspect of the GST portal login process — from first-time access to advanced sub-user management.

Step 1: Navigate to the Official GST Portal

Always access the portal at https://www.gst.gov.in/. Bookmark this URL and avoid accessing the portal via third-party links or search ads. Phishing sites that mimic the GST portal are common, and entering your credentials on a fake site can compromise your account. The genuine portal always shows a padlock icon and the gst.gov.in domain in the browser address bar.

Step 2: First-Time Login After GST Registration

Once your GST registration is approved, GSTN sends a Provisional ID (your 15-digit GSTIN) and a temporary password to the registered email of the primary authorized signatory. Follow these steps to set up your permanent login:

  1. Click Login in the top-right corner of gst.gov.in.
  2. At the bottom of the login box, click the link: "First time login? Click here to log in."
  3. Enter your GSTIN (Provisional ID) and the temporary password sent to your email. Complete the CAPTCHA and click Login.
  4. You will be prompted to create a permanent username and password. The username can be 8–15 characters (letters and numbers). The password must be 8–15 characters and include at least one uppercase letter, one lowercase letter, one digit, and one special character.
  5. Click Submit. Your permanent credentials are now active. Use these for all future logins — the temporary password expires after first use.

Step 3: Regular Login Process

For every subsequent login, the process is straightforward:

  1. Go to gst.gov.in and click Login.
  2. Enter your Username (the one you created in first-time login, or the registered email address in some cases).
  3. Enter your Password.
  4. Solve the CAPTCHA displayed on screen.
  5. Click Login. You will be directed to the dashboard.

DSC vs EVC Authentication: What's the Difference?

When submitting returns or applications on the GST portal, taxpayers must authenticate their identity using one of two methods:

FeatureDSC (Digital Signature Certificate)EVC (Electronic Verification Code)
How it worksUSB token with a cryptographic certificate plugged into the computerOne-time password sent to registered mobile number and email
Who must use DSC?Public limited companies, private limited companies, and LLPs (mandatory)Proprietorships, partnerships, and other non-corporate taxpayers (optional DSC)
Validity1–3 years (must be renewed)Valid for 10 minutes per session
Cost₹800–₹3,000 depending on validity and issuing authorityFree

For DSC-based authentication, you need to install the emSigner utility on your computer and plug in the USB token before signing any return or application.

Forgot Password: OTP-Based Recovery Steps

If you forget your GST portal password, reset it in under 5 minutes using the registered contact details of the authorized signatory:

  1. Click Login on the homepage, then click Forgot Password below the login form.
  2. Enter your username and solve the CAPTCHA. Click Generate OTP.
  3. An OTP will be sent simultaneously to the registered mobile number and the registered email address of the authorized signatory. Both are needed.
  4. Enter the OTPs from your mobile and email in the respective fields. Click Verify OTP.
  5. Set a new password meeting the complexity requirements (8–15 chars, uppercase, lowercase, digit, special character). Click Submit.
  6. Log in immediately with your new password.

Note: If you cannot receive OTP because the authorized signatory's mobile number has changed or is unreachable, you need to file a GST registration amendment (Form REG-14) to update the contact details before you can recover the password.

Checking GSTIN Status Without Logging In

You can verify any GSTIN's registration status publicly without needing an account:

  1. Go to gst.gov.in.
  2. In the top navigation, click Services Search TaxpayerSearch by GSTIN/UIN.
  3. Enter the 15-digit GSTIN and click Search.
  4. The result shows: Legal Name of Business, Trade Name, State, Registration Date, Taxpayer Type (Regular, Composition, etc.), and current Registration Status (Active / Cancelled / Suspended).

This lookup is widely used to validate supplier GSTINs before booking purchase invoices, since claiming ITC from a supplier with a cancelled or suspended GSTIN is not permitted.

Navigating the GST Portal Dashboard

After logging in, the dashboard provides quick access to all compliance modules. Here are the key sections every taxpayer should know:

Key Dashboard Modules:

  • Returns: Access all return filing windows — GSTR-1 (outward supplies), GSTR-3B (monthly summary), GSTR-9 (annual return), and GSTR-2B (auto-drafted ITC statement).
  • Payments: Create GST challan (PMT-06), view payment history, and initiate bank transfers for tax dues.
  • Ledgers: View your three electronic ledgers — Cash Ledger (deposits), Credit Ledger (ITC balance), and Liability Ledger (dues payable).
  • Registration: View, amend, or download your GST Registration Certificate (REG-06). File amendments for address, contact, or signatory changes.
  • Track Application Status: Under Services → Track Application Status, enter your ARN to check the processing status of registration, amendment, or cancellation applications.
  • User Services → Notices and Orders: View all notices, demand orders, and hearing schedules issued by the department against your GSTIN.

Role-Based Access: Who Can File Returns?

The GST portal uses a role-based access system. Only the Authorized Signatory (as declared in the registration application) can file and submit returns, create challans, and sign applications using DSC or EVC. If a CA or tax consultant handles your GST compliance, they need to log in using the taxpayer's own credentials — or be set up as a sub-user.

Adding Sub-Users Under a GSTIN

Businesses can grant limited access to accountants, CAs, or employees without sharing the main authorized signatory credentials. To add a sub-user:

  1. Log in as the Primary Authorized Signatory.
  2. Go to My Profile (top-right corner) → Manage API Access or navigate to Services → User Services → Manage GST Practitioners / Users.
  3. Click Add New User. Enter the sub-user's name, email address, and mobile number.
  4. Assign specific access roles: you can allow Return filing preparation, Application submission, or read-only Ledger access.
  5. The sub-user receives an email with their login credentials. They can prepare return drafts but cannot submit without the authorized signatory's OTP/DSC.

"Invalid username or password"Case-sensitive username mismatch or using GSTIN as usernameUsername is NOT the GSTIN — it is the custom username created during first-time login. Use Forgot Password if unsure.

Reconciling GST Portal Data with Your Tally Books

Once logged in, the data on the GST portal — particularly GSTR-2B for ITC and the Electronic Cash Ledger for payments — must match your Tally Prime books exactly. Common sources of mismatch include:

  • Suppliers not filing their GSTR-1, causing ITC to appear in your books but not in GSTR-2B.
  • Rounding differences in GST tax amounts between your invoice and the supplier's uploaded version.
  • Cash deposits made in the portal not yet entered in Tally as a contra or receipt voucher.
