PTEC vs PTRC Registration in Maharashtra: Key Differences & Guide
PTEC vs PTRC Registration in Maharashtra: Key Differences & Guide
Every company, firm, and self-employed professional in Maharashtra must comply with Professional Tax laws. Learn what PTEC and PTRC mean, who needs to register, and the application steps.
Who is this for: Indian Taxation
In Maharashtra, Professional Tax (PT) is governed by the Maharashtra State Tax on Professions, Trades, Callings and Employments Act, 1975. Any individual earning an income through salary, trade, or profession is subject to this tax. To comply, entities must obtain either a PTEC or a PTRC — or both.
What is the Difference Between PTEC and PTRC?
While both certificates relate to Professional Tax, they target different liabilities:
- PTEC (Professional Tax Enrollment Certificate): This is the tax paid by the business entity or self-employed individual for *themselves* (as a professional). It is a flat annual charge of ₹2,500. Directors, partners, sole proprietors, and companies must have a PTEC.
- PTRC (Professional Tax Registration Certificate): This is the tax deducted by an employer from *employees' salaries* and paid to the government. If you hire staff and pay salaries above the tax threshold, you must obtain a PTRC to deduct and remit this tax.
Who Needs Which Certificate?
| Entity Type | PTEC Needed? | PTRC Needed? |
|---|---|---|
| Self-employed Doctor / CA / Lawyer | Yes | No (unless they have employees) |
| Sole Proprietor (No Employees) | Yes | No |
| Company or LLP (with Employees) | Yes (Mandatory) | Yes (To deduct from salary) |
Professional Tax Slab Rates in Maharashtra
PTRC deductions from employee salaries are calculated based on these statutory monthly salary slabs:
- Up to ₹7,500 per month (Male): Nil
- Up to ₹10,000 per month (Female): Nil
- ₹7,501 to ₹10,000 per month (Male): ₹175 per month
- Above ₹10,000 per month (Male & Female): ₹200 per month (with ₹300 deducted in the month of February to total ₹2,500 annually)
Online Registration Process on the Mahavat Portal
Registration for both PTEC and PTRC is completed online through the Maharashtra State GST Department portal (Mahavat):
- Go to the official portal: mahavat.gov.in.
- Click on New Registration under the e-Services panel.
- Select the option for registration under the Profession Tax Act.
- Fill in the details of the company, partners/directors, PAN numbers, bank details, and business activity.
- Upload the required documents (PAN card, address proof, Certificate of Incorporation/Partnership Deed).
- Submit the application using Aadhaar e-verification or DSC. Once verified, the PTEC and/or PTRC number is generated.
Due Dates and Penalties for Delay
Complying with payment timelines is critical to prevent interest and late fees:
- PTEC Payment: The flat ₹2,500 fee must be paid annually on or before 30th June of each financial year.
- PTRC Payment: Remitted monthly (on or before the last day of the following month) if the annual tax liability is ₹50,000 or more. If it is less, the department allows annual returns.
- Penalties: Late payment attracts interest at 1.25% per month, plus a penalty of up to 10% of the tax due. Failure to obtain registration can invite penalties of ₹5 per day for PTEC and ₹5 per day for PTRC.
Recording PT Transactions in Tally Prime
To maintain accurate compliance reports in Tally Prime:
1. For PTEC (Self/Business Expense)
Create an expense ledger called "Professional Tax (PTEC)" under Indirect Expenses. When paid, record a Payment Voucher (F5): Debit "Professional Tax (PTEC)" and credit "Bank A/c".
2. For PTRC (Salary Deductions)
Create a ledger called "Professional Tax Payable (PTRC)" under the Duties & Taxes group. During salary processing:
Debit: Salary Expense (e.g. 50,000) Credit: Professional Tax Payable (PTRC) (200) Credit: Bank A/c (49,800)
