How to File GST Returns Directly from TallyPrime: GSTR-1 & GSTR-3B Guide
Complete tutorial on generating and filing GST returns from TallyPrime. Learn how to export GSTR-1 and GSTR-3B JSON returns directly to the GST portal.
Who is this for: GST & Tax Compliance
Filing Goods and Services Tax (GST) returns is mandatory for registered businesses in India. TallyPrime features integrated compliance reports that check sales and purchase records, identify data discrepancies, and export upload-ready JSON files for the GST portal.
Establishing a clean GST return workflow requires proper initial configurations, routine audit checks, and a clear understanding of TallyPrime's built-in statutory reporting dashboards.
Enabling GST Features in TallyPrime
Before creating GST-compliant vouchers, verify that statutory features are configured correctly:
- Load your company in TallyPrime and press F11 (Features).
- Set Enable Goods and Services Tax (GST) to Yes.
- In the GST Details screen, select your State, Registration Type (Regular or Composition), and enter your company's 15-digit GSTIN.
- Set your GSTR-1 filing frequency (Monthly or Quarterly). Press Ctrl+A to save the configuration.
Creating GST Tax Ledgers
To track tax liabilities, create separate ledgers for CGST, SGST, and IGST under the Duties & Taxes group:
- CGST Ledger: Create under Gateway of Tally > Create > Ledger. Name it "CGST", select the group Duties & Taxes, choose GST as the tax type, and select Central Tax. Keep the percentage of calculation as
0%to allow Tally to calculate taxes automatically based on stock item settings. - SGST Ledger: Set up similarly, selecting State Tax as the tax type under the GST category.
- IGST Ledger: Set up similarly, selecting Integrated Tax as the tax type to track interstate transactions.
Filing GSTR-1: The Step-by-Step Export Guide
GSTR-1 is your monthly or quarterly statement of outward supplies. To export GSTR-1 from TallyPrime:
Open the GSTR-1 Report
Go to Gateway of Tally > Display More Reports > Statutory Reports > GST Reports > GSTR-1. Change the period using F2 to reflect the filing month.
Review & Resolve Exceptions
Check the Uncertain Transactions (Correction Needed) section. Open this folder to resolve missing HSN codes, incorrect tax rate percentages, or invalid customer GSTIN configurations directly from Tally's exception resolution screen.
Export the JSON File
Press Alt+E (Export) and select GST Returns. Select the GSTR-1 return, set the file format to JSON, choose your local destination folder, and click export.
Upload to the GST Portal
Log in to the government GST Portal, select your returns period, click Prepare Offline, upload your exported JSON return, and verify the populated tables before submitting.
GSTR-3B Reconciliation & ITC Matching
GSTR-3B summarizes your outward supplies, inward taxable purchases, and Input Tax Credit (ITC) eligibility.
In TallyPrime, navigate to Statutory Reports > GST Reports > GSTR-3B. Reconcile the ITC totals calculated by Tally with the static GSTR-2B statement downloaded from the GST portal.
Use TallyPrime's Invoice Management System (IMS) dashboard to match records, identifying discrepancies where vendors have failed to upload their corresponding sales bills.
Fixing Common 'Uncertain Transactions'
If TallyPrime flags vouchers as uncertain, they will be excluded from the exported return files. Here is how to resolve common exceptions:
- HSN/SAC Details Missing: Drill down into the HSN exception folder, select the affected stock items, and enter the correct 4, 6, or 8-digit HSN code directly from the screen.
- Information Mismatch in Tax Ledgers: This occurs when the tax amount calculated manually in a voucher does not match Tally's internal calculations. Open the voucher, recheck your ledger tax rates, and allow Tally to auto-calculate the tax to clear the mismatch.
- GSTIN Missing or Invalid: Check the party master and verify that their 15-character GSTIN matches the state code and structure formatting rules.
Summary
Filing GST returns from TallyPrime is highly efficient when ledgers are configured correctly and exceptions are resolved prior to export. Maintaining a clean database minimizes compliance risks and ensures accurate tax filings.
